The Ash River area is well known for its clean and clear water, natural beauty, excellent fishing and close proximity to Voyageurs National Park. The Ash River begins 20 miles south at Ash Lake. It flows north from there to Ash River Falls where the navigable part of the river starts. From the falls, you can travel down stream past cottages, beautiful rock cliffs and resorts to the rivers end as it empties into Sullivan Bay and Kabetogama and Namakan Lakes. This is the southern part of the Canadian Shield, representing some of the oldest exposed rock formations in the world. This bedrock has been shaped and carved by at least four periods of glaciations.

Established in 1975, Voyageurs, Minnesota's only national park, commemorates a key stretch of waterway canoed by 18th century French-Canadian Voyageurs who transported goods and furs along the border waters.
